SBI Research Feature: OSU research on the role of northwest forests in the global carbon cycle
Bev Law is the OSU Professor of Global Change Forest Science. She and her research group, TERRA-PNW, study how northwest forests store and exchange carbon with the atmosphere, and respond to climate and disturbance. Read a short Web interview, where Bev describes some of the group's primary research questions and how their studies relate to understanding and responding to climate change.

Upcoming Abstract Deadlines
Friday, July 24, 2009. Abstracts due for the 5th ASM Conference on Biofilms. The meeting will be held November 15-19, 2009, in Cancun, Mexico, and will have sessions on biofilm evolution and communication, biofilm growth in many different environments and more. 40 travel grants of $500 each are available for predoctoral students who present at the meeting.
Friday, July 31, 2009. Abstracts due for the Seventh International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds, to be held in May 24-27, 2010, in Monterey, California. The program will emphasize field applications and case studies, but many presentations will address laboratory, pilot, and modeling studies of innovative remediation and rational site-closure approaches. Students can submit papers by November 30, 2009, to the meeting's student paper competition.
August 11, 2009. Abstracts due for the 2009 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held October 18-21 in Portland, Oregon. Several sessions may be of interest to the subsurface biosphere research community including:
- Characterizing, Predicting, and Managing Long-Term Contaminant Flux for Complex Subsurface Environments;
- Coupled Surface-Subsurface Modeling across a Range of Temporal and Spatial Scales;

September 15, 2009. Abstracts due for the 3rd International Conference on Environmental, Industrial and Applied Microbiology (BioMicroWorld2009). The meeting will be held in Lisbon (Portugal) from 2 to 4 December 2009 and will provide a multi-disciplinary forum, bringing together those involved in microbiology from both applied and research communities.

Opportunities for Students
GE & Science Prize for Young Life Scientists - For applicants who were awarded a PhD in molecular biology during 2007. For the purpose of this prize molecular biology is defined as "that part of biology which attempts to interpret biological events in terms of the physicochemical properties of molecules in a cell" -(McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th Edition). To apply, submit a 1,000 word essay on your work. There will be one grand prize and four regional prize winners. The winners will fly to Stockholm for the award ceremony meet some of the Nobel Prize laureates, have their PhD profiled in the online version of Science, and receive $25,000 or $5,000 for regional winners. Deadline: August 1, 2009.
The National Academies Research Associateship Program. The Research Associateship awards are open to doctoral level scientists and engineers (U.S and Foreign Nationals) who can apply their special knowledge and talents to research areas that are of interest to them and to the participating host laboratories and centers. Awards are available for Postdoctoral Associates (within 5 years of the doctorate) and Senior Associates (normally 5 years or more beyond the doctorate). Associates conduct research in residence at the participating host laboratory they have chosen. Applications due: August 1, 2009.
Humboldt Research Fellowship - "This fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows you to carry out a long-term research project (6-24 months) you have selected yourself in cooperation with an academic host you have selected yourself at a research institution in Germany." Description: Research is centered on the origin and early evolution of life, the potential of life to adapt to different environments, and the implications for life elsewhere. This research is conducted in the context of NASA’s ongoing exploration of our stellar neighborhood and the identification of biosignatures for in situ and remote sensing applications. - 7 August 2009. Recovery Act: Carbon Capture and Sequestration from Industrial Sources and Innovative Concepts for Beneficial CO2 Use.
Description: Funding Opportunity Number: DE-FOA-0000015 * Large-scale industrial carbon capture and sequestration projects from industrial sources ($1,321,765,000)—The objective of this technology area is to demonstrate advanced technologies that capture CO2 emissions from industrial sources—such as cement plants, chemical plants, refineries, steel and aluminum plants, and manufacturing facilities—and store the CO2 in deep saline formations and deep geologic systems including basalts, operating or depleted oil and gas fields, and unmineable coal seams. In the evaluation process, greater weight will be given to projects that propose to capture and sequester one million tons of CO2 per plant per year by 2015 as an integral component of commercial operation. * Innovative concepts for beneficial CO2 use ($100,000,000)—The objective of this technology area is to demonstrate innovative concepts for beneficial CO2 use, where "use" is defined as the permanent conversion of CO2 from flue gas into another form such as solid carbonates, plastics, and fuels. These breakthrough concepts have the potential to mitigate CO2 emission in areas of the country where geologic storage may not be an optimal solution.

Description: The MRI program assists with the acquisition or development of shared research instrumentation that is, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs. This is a limited submission program so applicants must submit a letter of intent to the OSU Research Office. For more information contact Debbie Delmore at 737-8390. s a result of the enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, NSF is holding a competition that is separate from the regular MRI competition. For this MRI-R2 competition only, proposals will be accepted for instrument development or for acquisition of a single instrument or a system of related instruments that share a common or specific research focus in the range $100,000-$6 million from Ph.D.-granting institutions of higher education and non-degree-granting organizations.
Funding Details: The MRI program now accepts proposals requesting over $2 million in NSF support (to the maximum request of $4 million) for the acquisition of a single instrument.
- Preproposal due: 11 August 2009. NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) (Full Proposal due: 14 September 2009).
Description: This program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the workforce following completion of an associate; baccalaureate; or graduate-level degree in science and engineering disciplines. Grantee institutions are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic information about student scholars, and managing the S-STEM project at the institution.

Description: The Biological Oceanography Program supports research in marine ecology broadly defined: relationships among aquatic organisms and their interactions with the environments of the oceans or Great Lakes.
- 15 August 2009. NSF Ocean Drilling Program (OD) .
Description: Support for participation and drilling-related research performed by United States scientists is provided by NSF. This support focuses on the following: * Investigations of potential drilling regions, especially by means of regional geological and geophysical field studies. * The feasibility and initial development of downhole instruments and techniques. * Downhole geophysical and geochemical experiments. * Support for research proposals to meet the scientific objectives of specific drilling expeditions. Grants resulting from these Expedition Objective Research (EOR) proposals will be for significant support to address the research objectives of the drilling expedition and are intended to begin in the period between the co-chief approval of the expedition sampling plan and the end of the sample moratorium period. NSF ODP encourages potential submitters to submit EOR proposals in time for the existing OCE target dates of February 15 and August 15. In addition, NSF will consider proposals for studies leading to long-range definition of future drilling objectives.
- 15 August 2009. NSF Marine Geology and Geophysics.
Description: The Marine Geology and Geophysics program supports research on all aspects of geology and geophysics of the ocean basins and margins, as well as the Great Lakes. The program includes: Structure, tectonic evolution and volcanic activity of the ocean basins, the continental margins, the mid-ocean ridges, and island arc systems; Processes controlling exchange of heat and chemical species between seawater and ocean rocks; Genesis, chemistry, and mineralogic evolution of marine sediments; Processes controlling deposition, erosion and transport of marine sediments; Past ocean circulation patterns and climates; and Interactions of continental and marine geologic processes.

Description: The Faculty Release Time program provides limited funding for individuals developing external grant proposals or who wish to further their scholarly activities.
Funding Details: Award amounts range between $3,500 and $6,000.
- 17 August 2009. USEPA Advancing Public Health Protection through Water Infrastructure Sustainability.
Description: This program is seeking new and innovative research applications that link opportunities to advance public health protection with improvements in the condition and function of the water infrastructure. For purposes of this RFA, the water infrastructure includes centralized and decentralized systems that convey, store, and distribute potable and non-potable water and collect and manage municipal and industrial wastewater, stormwater, and on-site rainwater. Innovation can take the form of wholly new applications or applications that build on existing knowledge and approaches for new uses. The focus of the solicitation is on improving the effectiveness of the water infrastructure for protecting public health. Projects should clearly demonstrate an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach that leads to advances in design, operation, and management of the water infrastructure and should directly tie those advances to public health protection in conjunction with improving water efficiency and reducing energy requirements.
Funding Details: Four year projects for up to $600k.

Description: This cluster focuses on research on innovative biological, chemical, and physical processes used alone or as components of engineered systems to restore the usefulness of polluted land, water, and air resources. Major areas of interest and activity in the program include: developing innovative biological, chemical, and physical treatment processes to remove and degrade pollutants from water and air; measuring, modeling and predicting the movement and fate of pollutants in the environment; and developing and evaluating techniques to clean up polluted sites, such as landfills and contaminated aquifers, restore the quality of polluted water, air, and land resources and rehabilitate degraded ecosystems. This program received supplemental funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Description: This program supports engineering research that seeks to balance society's need to provide ecological protection and maintain stable economic conditions. Research is encouraged to advance the next generation of water and wastewater treatment that will decrease material and energy use, consider new paradigms for delivery of services, and promote longer life for engineered systems. Other activities of interest include: Advancing engineering methods to promote smart growth strategies, Integrating economic development and protection of natural resources, Regenerating ecological functions of degraded environments, Understanding how large complex environmental systems behave, and Developing effective principles for adaptive management of such systems. This program received supplemental funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Description: Support will be provided to academic institutions to establish innovative programs to engage undergraduates in a year-round research and mentoring activity. - 17 September 2009. NSF Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems: Biosensing.
Description: The Biosensing Program supports innovative, transformative, and insightful investigations of fundamental problems with broad long term impact and applications that require novel use of bio-inspired engineering principles and sophisticated devices to meet the engineering and technology needs of the nation. The program is targeting research in the area of the monitoring, identification, and/or quantification of biological phenomena and will support potential technological breakthroughs that exist at the intersection of engineering, life science, and information technology.
Funding Details: The typical award size for the program is $100,000 for individual investigators or $200,000 for multiple investigators per year (including indirect cost).

Description: All grant applications should address one or more of these measures: Life Sciences: Provide the fundamental scientific understanding of plants and microbes necessary to develop new robust and transformational basic research strategies for producing biofuels, cleaning up waste, and sequestering carbon. Environmental Remediation: Provide sufficient scientific understanding such that DOE sites would be able to incorporate coupled physical, chemical and biological processes into decision making for environmental remediation and long-term stewardship. Climate Change Research: Deliver improved scientific data and models about the potential response of the Earth's climate and terrestrial biosphere to increased greenhouse gas levels for policy makers to determine safe levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This program received supplemental funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
